Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo basicsPoker Basics: How to Play 7 Card Stud Hi-LoThis is a classic poker game that in great part is play like Omaha hi-lo, where the low hand cannot have a card that is higher than 8 to qualify. At the left of the dealer the first player will be dealt two pocket cards or hole cards (just like in other poker variants) these 2 facing down and another card facing up, the “door" card. The player with the lowest value of the card facing up will need to start the betting round; just like in regular 7card stud this is called the ‘BRING IN” bet which is a small bet. Once this bet is placed, the wagering cycle continues to the left of the player. Player will have the option to raise, fold or just to call the bet. Once the round is completed the dealer gives the players the “fourth street card” facing up again, also known as "the turn." A new betting round will start, but now the player with the highest turn card will start it. Again the player to his/her left will continue the round. Once this other cycle is completed then the players will get another card facing up too. It is call the fifth street card, another betting round will take place following the same parameters as the previous one. Once completed the sixth street card will be dealt, followed by another round. The 7th street card is dealt which is the final card, given to the remaining players facing down. And the final betting cycle starts. As soon as the last betting round is done, the showdown will begin; players will now have to show their cards, and the one with the best 5 card value hand (high) out of the seven, will win the pot, if a player qualifies for the low hand meaning all cards are less than 8 then that player will win have of the pot for the lowest hand. Sometimes during the 7 card stud hi-lo none of the hands qualifies for the low hand therefore the high hand winner takes the whole pot. One thing to keep in mind while playing 7 card stud is that you will get 7 cards but you will only use 5 of them and also keep in mind that you can also use 2 separate hands of 5 cards to make a high hand and a low hand. Like saying that your cards were Ace-Ace-2-2-3-6-6, that will give you a high hand and also a low, being the high hand Aces & 6s, and the low hand Ace-2-3-2-6. While playing a hi-lo variant you need to know that you cannot have a card higher than 8 otherwise your hand will not qualify for the low hand dispute. So if your cards were Ace-2-4-6-9-9-10 there will be no low in your hand, in any case the best low you could make would be Ace-2-4-6-9. The last important thing to mention is that there will be times when you will have a flush straight with cards lower than 8 and it will not count for your low hand.
