Omaha Hi-Lo basicsPoker Basics: How to play Omaha Hi-LoLet’s start saying that this poker version is the one that gives you a double chance to win, Omaha Hi-Lo, also known as Omaha-8 or Omaha eight-or-better, is a really popular game variety of the Omaha; where each player will simply try to have either the best or the worse hand, the lowest value and the highest value hand. We won’t deny that Omaha Hi/Lo is most complex of all Omaha poker variations. While playing Omaha you will need to split your thoughts in between winning with a low hand –for this, you will need to qualify- or a high hand. Becomes defiance for some players looking to improve and reinforce their poker abilities. To qualify - in order to win with the lowest hand - you will need to have eight as you high card or lower. If all players fail to qualify, then the pot won’t be split up, and the highest hand winner will keep it entirely. To form the higher or lower hand the player will use his two pocket cards or hole plus 3 communal cards in order to form the best value hand in the case of the player reaching for the hi, and the one for the lo as we said for the 8 or less, since there must be at least three cards in the community pot that are eight or below. While playing Omaha Hi/Lo the aces will be your best friends, they are the most valuable cards. As we know the number of players will affect the amount of aces being in play, for example if 10 players are dealt 40 out of the 52 cards on the deck it is very conceivable that an ace will be dealt on the winning hand. So many players will automatically fold if they don’t get an Ace on their pocket cards. When a poker table is full of players if the odds to win the low hand are non to zero, you need to be extra careful while making decisions, do not jump to raise the blind, or re-raise other player’s high risk bet, be prudent. If in your hand you have many mid-range cards going from 6 to 9, you need to give your cards back to the dealer and fold. There is no problem in playing the hole cards if they are winning material, like the ones where you are eligible and capable to win the low hand with; why? Well simply because while playing at a full table the pot will be considerable good, enough reason to go for it if you have a chance to win; at the end the hardest dispute will focus on the high hand. Is worth to mention that is common for a low hand to tie with other low hands, which will reduce the winning pot, maybe giving you back only what you risked. If less than 5 players integrate the table, and the situation above happens you will end up with a deficit, now, this won’t always happen, and keep also in mind that there will be other hands to play. Hands without Aces can be played fancy-free. If you can be prudent then you may want to play your mid-range value cards, but again it is a lot better to fold these hands if a real good promise of a winning hand does not come out from the flop.
