Badugi Poker basicsPoker Basics: How to play BadugiThis game, also known as “Asian poker” is a game where the player with the lowest-ranking hand wins the pot. Although similar to traditional poker, the only secret to success here is true focus. Badugi is played with 4 cards and emphasis is on low cards. A “Badugi” hand is no pairs nor suited cards and the card with the least value continues while the rest must be tossed aside. As little as 2 and up to 6 players can play together at a time. Badugi has four components. These are Limit, Pot Limit, or Half-Pot Limit; and the blinds are pre-established. It begins with 4 cards face-down being given to each player and each player always keeping their or hand a secret from the others. There are four betting rounds. The first round starts after the initial dealing of the four cards to each player. The second, third and the fourth or final rounds all follow respectively. The betting rounds start with the player to the left of the big blind, going clockwise. Depending on their hands, all players may call, raise, fold or check. The survivors proceed to the next step of the card drawing round until all four rounds are completed. The bets increase with each betting round. Badugi is also called a “triple draw poker” because players only have three rounds to change their combination of cards. To win, a player may choose either not to draw any card or draw from one to four cards. In drawing cards, rotate starting from the left of the dealer going clockwise. Each card drawing round is completed in order to reach the next betting round. A showdown is needed to determine the winner(s) only if there are more than one player left after the fourth betting round. All cards are placed face up on the table and the winning hand is declared based on the Badugi rules; the hand with the least value always wins. In Badugi, 4 cards win over the 3, 2 and 1 card hands. Between hands with the same number of cards, the one with the lower value wins. Badugi is not a complicated game. It just takes practice to succeed. |
